The Formation Method is a development system for team members to guide each other out of the negative forces of erosive individualism, extractive industrialism, and exploitative consumerism and into connection, conspiration, and creation together.

Why Formation?

Today, my field of play is the executive board room. Growing up and through college, it was the soccer field. I loved the dual nature of formation on and off the field—the individual aspect and the team aspect.

I was formed as a player, person, and leader through disciplined practice of soccer fundamentals, conditioning, weight training, and nutrition. And I was formed with each team as a collective unit, where we created the culture and strategy of the team on and off the pitch.

As a soccer coach now with my daughters, I emphasize the importance of being formed individually, forming as a team collectively, AND in changing our specific game formation to adapt to environmental conditions and the competition.

Should we, for example, play a 4-4-2, a 3-5-2, or a 4-1-2-3 formation? It depends on the strengths and weaknesses of our team, who we’re playing against, and what’s happening during that particular game. We set up a strategy to fulfill our mission, and then we adapt in real time.

Leading complex organizations is the same. We identify our mission, set up our strategy, and then adapt based on market conditions and our competition.
